Indian police say at least 37 are dead and 15 were injured after an overnight bus fell off a bridge 125 miles south of Mumbai.
The predawn accident took place Tuesday near Khed in Ratnigiri district of Maharashtra, according Mahendra Singh Pardeshi, a police official present at the crash site. The bus travels regularly between the resort state of Goa to Mumbai.
The cause of the accident is unclear. The driver was also injured in the crash. Officials do not know how many were on board, but the bus does have a cacity of 55 passengers.
Early investigations show the driver was speeding through a narrow bridge and lost control of the vehicle at 3:30 am local time. The bus then plowed through a guardrail and fell into the dried up Jagpuri river.
Acccording to the IBT, police are investigating if the driver was intoxicated.
There were reports of tourists on board, including a Russian national who was saved.
