21-Year-Old Sues Her Parents for College Tuition, Parents Refuse To Pay

A 21-year-old New Jersey woman sued her estranged parents for $16,000 in college tuition money, and they are now refusing to pay.

Caitlyn Ricci moved out of her house in 2013 after, according to her mother, refusing to follow a curfew and do chores. Ricci herself, however, claims that she actually left home over a dispute about taking a summer class. After leaving home, Ricci moved in with her grandparents.

Her mother says that she made numerous attempts to stay in touch with Ricci to no avail, even “sending her letters and writing her poems,” according to the Daily Mail. Disputes over money led to Ricci’s parents, who are divorced, attempting to file for emancipation from their daughter. Before they could do so, they received papers from Ricci’s lawyers saying that she was suing them for tuition at a county college.

Then, in October of this year, Ricci sued her parents again for $16,000 tuition at Temple University. The parents agreed to pay the county college tuition, but they are refusing to pay the $16,000 towards Temple. Ricci sued her parents for contempt of court after they refused to pay.

“I love that child more than anything,” Caitlyn’s mother Maura McGarvey said in court. “But she only want the money.” Ricci rejected her mother’s claim, saying it was not about the money and that she simply wants to go to college.

Her paternal grandparents, who have been funding their granddaughter’s lawsuits, say that their son and daughter-in-law should go to jail if they don’t pay up. They have reportedly not spoken to their son in years.

Ricci’s parents, who became pregnant with her while McGarvey was still in college, divorced in 1997 but reportedly maintain a friendly relationship. Michael Ricci, Caitlyn’s father, said that what he wants more than anything is for his daughter to repair her relationship with him and McGarvey.

“I’m not going to pay,” Ricci said. “I’m not going to give them any money until my daughter has a relationship with me and we start to heal our family.”
