A drunk teenager who was trying to sneak back into his house died after he snuck into the wrong house and was shot by his neighbor.

Caleb Gordley, 16, was shot on Saturday around 2 a.m. after he spent the night partying. He had to sneak out of his house to go to the party because he was grounded for not cleaning his room.

His friends dropped him out at his house, or so they thought, later that night. He lived in a neighborhood full of similar-looking houses and had lived there less than a year.

When he climbed through a back window, the home’s burglar alarm system went off. The neighbor grabbed his gun before investigating the matter and shot the teen after he fired a warning shot.

Shawn Gordley, Caleb’s father, said the house was very similar to theirs.

“They have the exact same staircase as us, the exact same carpet. Caleb clearly thought he was in his own house. He probably stumbled around and was just trying to go to his room,” he said.

Donald West Wilder II, the neighbor who shot Caleb, is thought of as a “good neighbor who has lived in the home for about nine years and has been a Sterling volunteer firefighter for nearly two decades.”

Caleb’s parents said they forgive the neighbor who shot him and do not blame him for what happened.

Police are investigating the matter but charges have not been filed.
