Gang Of Men Set Teenage Girl On Fire In India After She Refused To Have Sex With Them

| by Jonathan Constante

Police have arrested four men in northern India after they set a teenage girl on fire for refusing their sexual advances. The teenage girl died Sunday from injuries sustained by the attack.

The incident occurred when the 15-year-old girl stepped outside her home in Uttar Pradesh state on November 6. According to superintendent RK Sahu, the girl was approached by six men who were trying to molest her. When she refused, the men dragged her back into her home, drenched her in kerosene and set her on fire, according to the victim’s family.

The girl was taken to a local hospital but died Sunday night. “Four of the six accused have been arrested,” Sahu said. “All of them belong to the same village and are of the same caste as that of the girl.”

Shahjahanpur Village is only 172 miles southeast of New Delhi, where a deadly gang-rape of a 23-year-old student on a bus made international headlines in December 2012. The incident caused a huge public outcry that resulted in tougher laws for sexual offenders. However, rape continues to be a big problem throughout the country.
