A 15-year-old girl who was last seen walking home from Kennett High School in Conway, New Hampshire on October 9 has been found and reunited with her family.
The girl, Abigail Hernandez, was seen by witnesses walking on a normal route from school towards her house on the day that she disappeared. She also sent several text messages during the walk, adding to the unusual nature of her disapperance.
According to Fox News, investigating authorities discovered a few months ago that Hernandez had written a letter and sent it to her mother at home. The police suggested that Hernandez had run away from home, with the possible involvement of another individual.
FBI Special Agent Kieran Ramsey, who was tasked with investigating the case, claimed the letter Hernandez sent changed the nature of the investigation, giving the authorities hope that she could still be discovered.
“It was unprecedented. It gave us hope,” Ramsey said.
The details of Hernandez’s return are uncertain, but law enforcement officials tasked with the case have claimed that a criminal investigation into her disappearance will continue.
“Further details will be provided once it has been determined that releasing additional information will not compromise the integrity of the ongoing criminal investigation,” reads a press release from the New Hampshire State Police and Attorney General’s office, according to NBC News.
Hernandez’s mother Zenya reportedly told police “today we are the happiest people on earth” after their daughter was returned to their care.
