A Texas middle school teacher has been charged with sexual assault after admitting to having an affair with a teenage student.
Thao "Sandy" Doan, a 27-year-old social studies teacher at Raul Quintanilla Middle School in Dallas, was arrested on Jan. 20 in connection to the alleged affair.
According to police, the student had been blackmailing her in exchange for his silence, reports the Daily Mail.
In early January, the boy's mother informed the police that her son was receiving thousands of dollars from Doan, and was using it to buy alcohol and drugs, according to the arrest affidavit cited by the Dallas Morning News.

One message allegedly read: "Aint b'sing watch ima start getting the pics and everything ready to show the cops. Right i aint playing." Police say Doan paid the teen about $28,000 in several cash installments, in response to the threats.
In an interview with WFAA, the teen's uncle said his nephew regarded his teacher as his personal "piggy bank."
The boy's mother also weighed in on the matter, blaming her son as well as Doan, reports the Dallas Morning News. "She did very bad. She did bad," the mother said of the teacher. Regarding her son, she added: "I'm not condoning what he did because I know he was wrong at what he also did because blackmailing is not acceptable."

Doan said she also began receiving extortion calls from someone she did not know in January.
The teacher reportedly admitted to having sex with the student at a park in the summer of 2015. Despite the ongoing blackmail, she and the boy had several more sexual encounters between November and December 2015, according to the arrest document.
According to Quintanilla Middle School’s website, Doan coaches soccer and cross country, in addition to teaching her sixth grade social studies class. She was placed on administrative leave following her arrest.
The student is not expected to face criminal charges in the case.
