A 12-year-old Russian girl killed herself on Wednesday, after her parents discovered she’d been watching pornography online.

Daria, whose first name was given by police, reportedly had an argument with her parents after they found out she had been viewing porn. Following the exchange, Daria reportedly jumped to her death from the 14th floor of her apartment.

“After the death of the adolescent her parents looked through her texts and found several messages from the girl’s friends,” a source from local law enforcement said. “The content was of quite an obscene nature.”

Officials argued that the girl was brought up in a two-parent home, but despite suggesting domestic bliss, Daria’s parents allegedly had plans of a divorce. Additionally, the girl’s older sister had died in a car accident nine years ago.

Russian Internet users rushed to comment on the case, with some blaming the parents for Daria’s suicide.

“They should have spoken with her calmly,” one user wrote. “This is such a delicate situation.”

Others argued that the distribution of porn should be stopped or restricted. While Russia adopted a strict law against the distribution of harmful material to minors in 2012, some believe there should be stronger guidelines. Government authorities noted that the law is meant to filter explicit sexual content, details on how to commit suicide, drug use, and sites that solicit children for porn.
