A 10-year-old Florida boy was arrested Sept. 7, accused of murdering his 2-year-old cousin, Journee Blyden.
According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the boy was charged with manslaughter, reports the Orlando Sentinel. Police were called to the boy’s home in Ocala on June 21, where they found Journee unconscious and not breathing.
On June 23, doctors at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville said Journee no longer had brain activity, and she was declared dead the following day, The Gainesville Sun reported at the time.
When initially questioned by authorities, the boy and his sister said Journee fell out of her playpen, according to the sheriff’s office. An autopsy showed bruises, cuts and multiple skull fractures that were inconsistent with a fall, and the medical examiner ruled it a homicide.

The suspect’s sister later changed her story, saying her brother had a history of hitting both her and Journee, and that she saw him take Journee out of her crib and throw her on the floor.
When questioned again, the suspect came up with two new stories, saying he tripped and fell on Journee while carrying her, and also that he accidentally pushed her off a counter.
The boy was booked into the Marion County Juvenile Detention Center on Sept. 7 on a manslaughter charge.
Journee’s father, Kendall Corey Dustin Blyden, of Ocala, was charged in November 2014 with the death of 1-year-old Jayden Green.
