A wild brawl broke out between the Southern and Texas Southern University women's college basketball teams, cheerleaders and fans on March 7.

The fight happened with 12:37 left in the game, noted Sporting News (video below).

Southern was leading the game 51-49, when a Texas Southern University player charged for the basket. Moments later, the fight broke out.

Southern coach Sandy Pugh told The Advocate:

I’ve been involved with basketball for 30-plus years, and I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s an embarrassment.

I just saw two kids standing up looking at each other and someone else push and yell. My first reaction is to tell everyone to stay on the bench. But I look up and TSU has two kids running in.

One of their kids throws the first punch, and one of our kids was on the ground and someone was just pounding her. Next thing I know, it was a melee.

The game was called off by the referees, which gave Southern the win. Both teams will be competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament at Houston’s Toyota Center.

”It was very undisciplined by both teams and fans on the sideline," Texas Southern University coach Johnetta Hayes-Perry added. "I thought after the charge both players were trying to get up, but another player pushed them and that is all I could see."

"They will get film over to the conference office and get word from the officials," Southern athletic director William Broussard stated. "That will all be pending until they review the film."
