Justin Bieber has managed to upset thousands of people with a comment that appeared to show a lack of respect for the late music icon, Prince.
The world has been mourning the death of 57-year-old artist, humanitarian, and musical legend Prince. People throughout the nation have been paying their respects, from MTV halting their regular programming to play Prince’s repertoire, to Google changing their font to a deep purple and adding rain for their U.S. users.
Former California Breed guitarist Andrew Watt wrote an emotional tribute to Prince on Instagram:
This past Tuesday night before my show I was picking out an outfit...I was so tired from the past week of endless traveling and gigging that I grabbed my Prince shirt and said [expletive] it I'm gonna channel the purple one tonight...I didn't shower after the gig out of pure exhaustion...I went to sleep in that shirt and then I wore it again all day yesterday...today waking up to this news I am truly beside myself...devastated...the last of the greatest living performers...my guitar idol...his connection to ALL his instruments yielded a sexual transcending aura and the world is just less [expletive] cool without him walking on it... As a response to Watt’s tribute, Justin Bieber decided to comment about something he perceived as a fallacy in the Instagram post.
"Well not the last greatest living performer," Bieber wrote, according to a screenshot on US Magazine.
More than 2,000 comments have been made to the post. Most responses to the Instagram tribute are angry at Bieber for his insensitive remark, and have been left by both those who are not fans of the 22-year-old pop star and those who self-identify as "beliebers."
"Amazing how you can make someone's death all about you," wrote vanessasnegura "Really incredible. This is why you will continue to not get the respect you want. @justinbieber"
"Don't give @justinbieber the attention he wants,” wrote ashwatson9. "This post is about Prince - a true musical genius. RIP"
