An Illinois mother says she plans to press charges against her 8-year-old son’s elementary school after the boy was boxed off from the rest of the class for two months as a form of punishment.

Melody Haller’s son attends Alhambra Elementary School in Madison County, KTVI reported. The boy was reportedly being disciplined for talking in class.

But Haller said the punishment was far too severe. She learned the school had placed a cardboard box around him, isolating him from the rest of the class for two whole months.

Haller said she was never informed by the school that her son was in trouble. She learned about the punishment through her son.

When Haller visited the school on Feb. 29 to see the box, she was outraged. She took a photo of the box and shared it on Facebook alongside a lengthy post.

“We are investigating every aspect of the concerns and will take the appropriate action once we conclude our investigation,” the school district said in a written statement, reports Daily Mail.

Haller said she believes students should be disciplined for breaking the rules, but insisted that schools should review their policies to ensure the punishment is fair. She said she now plans to press charges against the school.

The box has since been taken down, the Daily Mail reported.
