According to a blog post on Trappasaurus Blog, the creature could be an Endo’s Goosefish, also known as a monkfish. The blog describes the fish as “looking like the devil himself,” and says that it is a deepwater member of the anglerfish family.

“Like all anglerfishes, Endo’s Goosefish uses a specially adapted dorsal fin ray as a fishing rod to lure smaller prey near to it’s gruesome mouth,” the blog explained. “You can guess what happens next.”

Australian Museum fish collector Mark McGrouther told Daily Mail he believes it could be a pike eel and that this was the first time he had seen one of the strange creatures in person.

“I suspect it was caught and discarded by fishermen who got more than they bargained for when they tried to reel it in,” he said.
