Scottish Mom Sparks Controversy After Facebook Photo Shows Her Son Posing In A Washing Machine (Photos)

A Scottish woman says she can’t understand why her neighbors made such a fuss after she posted a photo to Facebook showing her young son inside a washing machine.

“He loves the washing machine,” Courtney Stewart of Erskine, Renfrewshire, told the Daily Record. “We took a picture and it was a laugh.”

The picture clearly shows a child’s face peering through the door of a front-loading washing machine. The door does not appear to be latched, with an adult’s hand in the picture holding the door to the machine.

Stewart, 21, said her 2-year-old son, who has Down syndrome, was never in any danger and the machine was unplugged as she was awaiting the delivery of a new washer.

“He’s got a bit of a washing obsession,” she explained of her son’s desire to play in the machine. “Anyone who knows him would know he’s got a washing obsession.”

But an unnamed member of the public who contacted the Daily Record suggested there was nothing funny about the picture.

“For anyone, let alone someone who is also a parent, to take a picture like that and stick it on Facebook for a laugh is unbelievable,” the person said.

“He is clearly laughing in the pictures,” Stewart said. “So I don’t understand why somebody took that picture as – well, I don’t know what they took it as.

“What did they think I was doing to him? Taking him for a spin?” she added.

Stewart said she took down the picture after being visited by police on Sunday. They reportedly showed up as the result of an anonymous tip.

Police Scotland confirmed with the Daily Mail that officers did investigate the photograph, but gave few details.

“Police did attend at the home and advice was given,” a spokesman was quoted as saying. “The normal checks were carried out.”

Police also reportedly had to respond to accusations that Stewart was assaulted on her front porch by someone upset over the photo.

“I got assaulted by a woman,” Stewart told the Daily Record “She came to my door and said I was a f**king nutter and she wouldn’t let me anywhere near her kids.

“It happened on my doorstep at 11 o’clock in the morning,” she added. “I got assaulted in my own home.”

Police reportedly arrested a 42-year-old female suspect in connection with the assault. She is due back in court next week, according to the Daily Record.
