A North Carolina man’s marriage proposal nearly ended in disaster after he accidentally dropped the engagement ring into the ocean.
Matthew Picca, 25, had a romantic plan to proposal to his girlfriend, 24-year-old Kayla Harrity, on a dock in Southport, North Carolina, last week when the unthinkable happened.
“I turned around and he was getting down on one knee,” Harrity said. “As he opened the ring box, the ring fell out of the box and fell through the cracks on the deck and into the water. I didn't even get to see it before it dropped."
Shocked, Harrity said she immediately began crying.
“I covered my face and began to cry because I knew my boyfriend was devastated,” she said. “Matthew did not even get to say anything to me before the ring fell into the ocean."
Passersby noticed the situation and quickly offered to help, jumping into the water to try and find the ring. Harrity said she even ran into nearby restaurants to see if anyone had goggles.
After a two-hour search that included 10 flashlights and five pairs of goggles, a man shouted that he’d found the ring.
“Everyone at the bar was cheering. All of a sudden, everyone was chanting 'Propose again! Do it again!’” Harrity said. “It was the best feeling in the world. My fiancé, soaking wet, smelling like salty, fishing water, proceeded to get down on one knee and put the beautiful ring on my finger!"
