A Los Lunas, New Mexico, police officer was praised for his act of kindness towards a homeless man on Oct. 31 (video below).
Officer Mark Gurule stopped to check on a man seen outside several local businesses after witnesses became concerned when they saw him napping on a rock.
When he arrived at the scene, Gurule noticed that the man had his socks and shoes laid out next to him so they could dry, Mad World News reports. The shoes were severely worn and falling apart.
Gurule told the man to stay where he was, and he quickly ran across the street to a store.
Gurule returned a short while later with a brand new pair of shoes and some socks. He also included a $20 bill to use for food or necessities.
“The most rewarding feeling was when the man put on his socks and shoes and he gave me a thumb ups with a big smile on his face,” Gurule told KOAT, according to Mad World News.
The officer, who has been with the Los Lunas Police Department for five years, was commended by the department for his actions, KOB reports.
