A man got a big surprise at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Wausau, Wisconsin, when he was informed the police officer in front of him had paid for his meal.

Chief Jeffrey Hardel of the Wausau Police Department received an email on Oct. 15 from a man named Bob, who visits Wausau regularly for business.

According to a post on the Wausau Police Department’s Facebook page, Bob had had an “exceptionally stressful day” and went for some late-night food at McDonald’s. In front of him in the drive-thru line was a Wausau Police squad car.

When Bob pulled up to the window to pay for his food, the cashier told him it had already been paid by the officer in from of him to “pay it forward.”

“What a great thing to happen anytime, it made a really bad day good,” Bob wrote in the email.

Bob said that he “immediately paid it forward” and took care of the bill for the car behind him.

“Happy to pay it!” he wrote.
