Maddie Carlson, who is battling a rare bone cancer, was pulled over by officers along with her mother, and they initially thought they were in serious trouble, Inside Edition reports. Officers reportedly accused Kathy Carlson, the girl’s mother, of being distracted by their dog, who was also in the car, and driving erratically.

Instead, the teen learned that her mother arranged for the officers to present her with a $250 check towards treatment — money that had been raised for her by the police department.

“It was so meaningful to her,” Kathy said. “This is emotionally really difficult for her so this was a pick-me-up that melted our hearts. To see her smile – that doesn’t happen often for us right now.”
