Social media users were touched when a California teen shared a photo of her father keeping her mother company while she is isolated during her cancer treatment.

Mackenna Newman tweeted the photo, which shows her father, Jon, sitting outside of his wife's room in order to keep her company while she has to stay in isolation, BuzzFeed reports.

"My mom has to stay in her room in isolation for her cancer radiation so my dad set up a desk at her door to keep her company and I'm crying," wrote Mackenna in an April 14 tweet that gained more than 7,000 retweets and 9,000 likes, according to WPIX.

"Praying for your mom," tweeted another user. "My mom was just diagnosed with leukemia and my dad has not left her side. She starts chemo on Tuesday."

"I had radioactive iodine treatment for thyroid cancer also!" said another user. "Your Dad is a sweetheart &making a 'Big Difference' for your Mom. It matters."

Others were simply overcome with emotion.

"Dear thanks for sharing this," wrote one user. "This has so much power that everytime I read this my eyes get wet & heart swells. Hugs ur way."

Mackenna said that she was grateful for all of the support and good wishes.

"The amount of love I've received is crazy and I didn't expect any of it, but I'm so grateful," she said.

People who are treated with radiation for thyroid cancer must be isolated until they are released by a radiation safety officer, according to the Thyroid Cancer Survivor's Association.

The TCSA says that isolation after the treatment can be lonely and emotionally difficult. After returning home, the TCSA recommends staying at least three feet away from other people for the first six days, staying at least six feet away most of the time.

The teen's mother said that Jon's gesture is characteristic of his dedication during her cancer treatment.

"Jon goes to every doctor's appointment, every blood test, every surgery, every radiation," said Mackenna's mother. "And, as you can see, if he can't be by my side he is as close as he can get!"
