Out Of The Frying Pan And Into The Fire: Paula Deen Faces New Racially Charged Controversy Over Brown Face Photo

| by Amanda Andrade-Rhoades

A couple sticks of butter may not fix this gaffe.

Paula Deen, the famed television chef who faced controversy for using racial slurs two years ago, is in hot water again after a photo appeared online of her standing next to her son, Bobby Deen, who’s dressed up in brownface.

The photo was tweeted on July 7. Though the tweet has since been deleted, the image featured Paula dressed as Lucille Ball’s “I Love Lucy” character while her son was dressed as Lucy’s husband, Desi Arnaz, who is Cuban. Bobby darkened his complexion significantly using makeup.

“Lucyyyyyyy! You got a lot of esplainin’ to do! #TransformationTuesday,” read the caption of the photo, according to Hollywood Life.

The photo was apparently from a 2011 episode of “Paula’s Best Dishes” for Halloween.

In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Paula’s representative claimed she did not personally post the photo.

“Paula immediately had this picture taken down as soon as she saw the post and apologizes to all who were offended,” the rep said. “As such, Paula Deen Ventures has terminated their relationship with this social media manager.”

Though Paula was dropped from The Food Network after the last racially charged controversy, she now hosts the Paula Deen Channel on Roku.
