A viral Facebook post is letting people in on a simple trick that many may not know could keep them from being the victim of a home intrusion.

Social media figure Bryan Silva shared a post on Facebook about a simple thing that anybody can do to keep away criminals using just your car’s key fob.

The post says that you should always keep your car keys beside your bed at night and that “If you hear a noise outside your home or someone trying to get in your house, just press the panic button for your car.”

Doing this, the post says, will set the car’s alarm off, potentially scaring away a burglar or intruder. The car alarm will continue to sound until you turn it off yourself or until the car’s battery dies.

Silva suggests testing the remote control from your bed or other rooms in your house to make sure that it works in the event of an emergency.

Though it may not be the most reliable method, this simple trick can be a useful tool to prevent crime and improve your home security for no cost.

Although the post was originally written on June 17, Silva recently shared it and it has since gone viral, Liftbump reports.
