Marvel is facing controversy over its choice to cast a white actor in the upcoming Iron Fist Netflix series.

Game of Thrones actor Finn Jones was hired to play the title character and martial arts expert instead of an Asian actor, a choice that sparked outrage on social media. Even Marvel writer Marjorie Liu weighed in on the controversy.

"Iron Fist is an orientalist-white-man-yellow-fever narrative," she tweeted. "Asian actor would have helped subvert that offensive trope, and reclaim space."

Despite the controversy, it has been widely pointed out that the character in the comic books was always white. Many have even said casting an Asian actor would be a stereotypical move.

Iron Fist will be the fourth collaboration between Marvel and Netflix, Entertainment Weekly reported. The series' showrunner is set to be Dexter alumn Scott Buck.
