Former First Daughter Spotted In NYC With Mystery Man (Photos)

| by Simone Stover

Former first daughter Malia Obama may have a new man in her life.

On the evening of March 29, Malia was seen with an unidentified man walking around SoHo, reports the Daily Mail. The couple was also accompanied by another unidentified woman. According to a witness, Malia and her companions were seen both laughing and joking as they walked.

Malia and her male companion seemed to be dressed very casually, with Malia sporting a T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers, while her male companion was wearing a coat, beanie, and boots. Their female companion was slightly cropped out from the photographs, but appeared to be dressed very casually, as well.

According to Vanity Fair, Malia, who is currently 18, is taking a gap year before beginning school at Harvard this upcoming fall. She is currently in New York City working as an intern for The Weinstein Company, which is owned by famous producer Harvey Weinstein. She began the internship back in February.

This is not Malia's first time working for a company in the entertainment industry. Before starting her work with The Weinstein Company, Malia gained some experience in the industry by working on the set of the HBO program "Girls" in the summer of 2015.

It is unclear at this point if Malia's companion is just a platonic friend or a potential romantic partner. However, some might wonder how her father -- former President Barack Obama -- might react if her relationship with the man turns out to be of a romantic nature.

It initially might seem like Mr. Obama might be slightly averse to his daughter dating. In an interview with GQ in November of 2015, the former president was asked if any boy had come to the White House to take Malia out on a date.

"No," he replied, "but I’ve seen some folks glancing at her in ways that made me not happy."

Despite those comments, other statements that Mr. Obama has made since then seem to indicate that he was merely joking and is, in fact, completely fine with both Malia and her younger sister, Sasha, dating.

In an interview with WDCJ, Mr. Obama said that he felt "pretty relaxed" about the idea, according to ABC News. He listed two reasons why.

"One is, Michelle, she’s such a great example ... how she carries herself, her self-esteem not depending on boys to validate how you look or you know, not letting yourself be judged by anything other than your character and intelligence," he said.

"And hopefully," he continued, "I’ve been a good example in terms of how I’ve shown respect to my wife."
