A husband and wife of 70 years were admitted to the same hospital a week apart. Now, a photo of them holding hands in Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, has gone viral.

“Can I see her?” John Mullins, 92, asked his caregiver, after learning that is 90-year-old wife, Bernice Mullins, had been admitted to the same hospital he was in, WTVR News reports. She had been recently admitted for surgery, and he had been hospitalized since November 2015.

Although Chyenne Marion, John’s caregiver, was told that he was connected to too many machines to be moved, it turned out that Bernice could be moved. Her bed was soon rolled into her husband’s room.

“They rolled her bed into his room and they held hands for a couple of hours I think… just holding hands,” Angie Gaines, the couple’s granddaughter, told WISH TV.

John and Bernice married in 1945 when John was in the Navy, according to Gaines, who was raised by her grandparents after her parents’ death. However, about 30 years ago, the couple realized they could no longer live with each other.

“My grandfather was a little bit of a wild child, and that’s when they actually separated 30 years ago,” Gaines said. “But they never divorced, they never moved away from each other, they lived side by side… they actually got along better that way, but they were always there for each other.”

Even though the couple did not live together, they still took care of one another.

“He would do her shopping and she would pay his bills,” Gaines said. “The love never went anywhere.”

Chyenne took a picture of the couple holding hands, which has been shared almost 1,000 times on the Scott Wise - WTVR CBS 6 Facebook page as of Dec. 21. It has been "liked" over 4,000 times.

“They are two of the sweetest, cutest people there is. […],” Rene Marion, Chyenne’s mother, posted as a comment. “They have become not only her patients but part of her family.”

The couple, whose 71st wedding anniversary is next month, is expected to be released before the end of the year.
