Heroic Teacher Rewarded For Her Generosity

| by Amanda Andrade-Rhoades

Sonya Romero, a kindergarten teacher at Lew Wallace Elementary in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is loved by her students and colleagues for her selflessness.

This week, her generosity was rewarded on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

While she was sitting in the audience, Romero was called up to the stage, much to her surprise. Ellen then showed her a heartwarming video created by Romero’s students and colleagues. “I was speechless, speechless,” she said. “That to me is just absolutely priceless to hear what my school and the students had to say.”

Some of Romero’s students have hard lives and she pays for their needs out-of-pocket. When two of her students needed a home six months ago, she took them in and became their foster mother.

Ellen was so moved by Romero’s story, she flew her out for the show. After they watched the video, Ellen got choked up. “Well now I’m crying too because it’s sweet as can be and your son’s crying, you’re an amazing woman,” Ellen said.

Ellen gave Romero a $10,000 check from Target, plus another check from Target for the same amount, made out to Lew Wallace Elementary.

“I feel incredibly humbled and grateful,” Romero told KRQE. “I’m glad that it gives teachers some exposure to what really goes on in our classrooms.”
