A 2-year-old German Shepherd in Tampa, Florida, is fighting for his life after taking a rattlesnake bite to save a 7-year-old family member, Molly DeLuca, on May 11 (video below).

"The bond that they have created in a short time has been unbelievable," Molly's mother, Donya DeLuca, told WTVT.

"[Molly] saw [Haus] jump back, and go forward, and jump back and go forward [in the back yard]," Donya recalled. "He was just kind of holding his ground."

"Next thing we know is, there's blood and [Haus] was limping and crying," she added.

Veterinarians found three snake bits on Haus. On May 12, the dog was still in critical condition and on a steady drip of anti-venom.

Donya said:

He made a choice and he was standing up. And I know, just based on temperament, he was standing up for my daughter, he was standing between, he didn't budge. He kept taking hits, and she was on the other side of him, and so was my mom.

I feel really grateful for the dog. It is frightening to think it could have been my daughter, because I don't know if she would have made it.

I couldn't even sleep last night. I barely slept because it is bittersweet. I am doing everything I can. I feel like I owe it to him to keep trying to save him.

The DeLuca's set up a GoFundMe page for Haus' vet bills that already reached $10,000 on May 12:

We just can't yet quanitfy what Haus will need. To estimate - it's between $1000 to $1500 per day in ICU which it's looking like at least a week. The vials of the low-protein anti-venom are $618 a vial and he's averaging 4-5 per day.

He may need surgery to clean the wound and a skin graft, he may not. We just can't say at this time. What we know is all things considered he is doing great. Any funds that exceed the needs of Haus will be donated to local German Shepherd rescues.
