It is has been discovered that Facebook has yet another secret inbox, which may contain messages dating back to 2008.

As reported on the Guardian, Facebook has an inbox hidden four levels deep within the settings on the Facebook Messenger application. Generally speaking, the majority of these messages are either manually unfiltered messages, such as bulk responses that Facebook groups have sent, or inquiries from people who are not directly connected to you on Facebook.

Although most messages can be ignored without any negative consequences, some important messages may have gotten caught in the Facebook spam filter, such as notifications about the death of a loved one, inquiries about employment opportunities, or greetings from old friends.

"I think it’s a ploy to get us to check Facebook more often," joked Travis Mayfield on WNEP News. "Oh, you didn’t get all your messages. You’ve checked the secret box, but now you have to check the really secret box."

Although Facebook does typically filter but send a notification when someone with whom you are not connected sends you a message, this feature filtered the messages even further.

According to Mayfield, Facebook Messenger users need to go to the "Settings" icon at the bottom right-hand corner of the screen. Then, click on "People."

After that, click on "Message Requests," which will show you several people who have attempted to contact you though the messenger. You may or may not already be aware of these messages.

At the bottom of the screen, there’s a link called, "See Filtered Requests."

Many of these messages are from people who have tried to contact you but were filtered out by Facebook.

Stella Creasy, Member of Parliament for the London constituency of Walthamstow, had to write a Facebook post to inform people to contact her through email instead of Facebook.

"Eek! Just looked at the 'filtered' message thing on Facebook and seen there are literally thousands of messages and queries […] thank you in advance for your help in letting other residents know email is the best way to get hold of me."
