A dog died after shielding an 8-month-old infant during a home fire in Baltimore, Maryland, on Aug. 14 (video below).

Erika Poremski had just walked outside to her car when she noticed the fire and heard her 8-month old daughter Viviana crying from inside, according to WBAL.

"I just heard her crying and I couldn't get to her," Poremski told the news station. "I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn't [get her out]. Nobody could."

Firefighters entered the home and found the family dog, Polo, covering Viviana with his body.

"She only had burns on her side because of it," Poremski said. "He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn't even come downstairs to get out the door."

Firefighters revived the baby, but Polo was not as lucky.

"He was my first baby and now I lost him," Poremski stated. "And I'm just praying I don't lose her. She's all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don't understand it. I just don't know why this stuff happens."

Viviana is hospitalized with severe burns.

"She's doing the best she can right now," Poremski told said. "And she's fighting and that's it. She's a really good girl I just hope she's OK."

Baltimore City Fire Department spokesman Samuel Johnson said the department is investigating the cause of the fire.

Poremski's father created a GoFundMe page, which has raised more than $26,000 for his daughter.

"There is a lot of unknown concerning Viv," the GoFundMe states. "She is burned on 19% of her body and is not awake as they are doing a lot of testing. They lost EVERYTHING. Any donations would be appreciated. Erika is in need of any help. Please keep these two beautiful souls in your prayers."
