Thousands worldwide sent a 9-year-old boy in Indiana gifts and wishes after nobody showed up to his birthday party on April 2.
Gerald Hamilton’s mother reportedly sent out 30 party invitations to his classmates, WBBM reports.
“Twelve classmates said that they would come to his party,” Gerald’s grandmother, Amelia Lara, told WBBM. “Three o’clock came and went. Four o’clock came and went. Five o’clock came and his mom said ‘we should cut the cake’ and Gerald said, ‘But one of my friends might come’ and none came.”
Lara explained Gerald is slower than the other children in the second grade because he had to undergo three major brain surgeries.

When Lara contacted the classmates’ parents, they explained the children did not want to attend his party because he was not like them.
“My child can’t play with your’s -- he is just too different,” the parents reportedly said, recalled Lara on Facebook.
Lara turned to social media to post about the incident.
“How sad he is 9 he just wants to have friends. So no one came, no cards, no presents. So, it is my mission to have as many cards as I can mailed to my little guy. You can send them to me and I’ll make sure he gets them ... this breaks my heart,” she wrote.

The response was unexpected to say the least: thousands were so moved they shared the post. The boy received gifts and cards from places ranging from London, England, to Vietnam.
“It just went crazy,” Lara said.
Many also commented sharing that they, too, had experienced a similar incident.
“My nephew had this happen to him every year until my sister stopped throwing him b-day parties,” Facebook user Nicole Victor said. “My nephew is the kindest most loyal boy in the whole world and he lost out on knowing what friends at school and what b-day parties really are like.”
As a result, Victor was determined to join everybody else in cheering Gerald up.
“My boys will shop for him tonight. They understand all too well how much it hurts,” Victor said.
