Redskins' Albert Haynesworth Has Muscle Disorder

The summer of bad news for Albert Haynesworth and the Washington Redskins as the team learned that the defensive lineman is suffering from a muscle disorder known as Rhabdomyolysis. The defensive tackle has been skipping practices due to the condition, but blamed his absence on other reasons.

Team officials have been playing down Haynesworth’s sickness in the past weeks before the Washington Post reported that the defensive lineman had the disorder. Rhabdomyolysis is known to break down skeletal muscle because of injury to muscle tissue. The injury could have occurred because he failed to report to camp in shape.

Haynesworth skipped practice Tuesday, and didn’t practice Wednesday or Friday. Head coach Mike Shanahan initially told reporters that his All-Pro defensive lineman was missing practice because of an illness, then he blamed it on dehydration before saying it was a headache Haynesworth suffered from.

“You’ll have to ask them, but I guess they’ll tell you ‘headaches’ again,” said Haynesworth, emphasizing the word by holding his fingers in the air to simulate quotation marks. “It was part of it, but it wasn’t all of it. They left out a whole lot of stuff.”

Shanahan is expected to comment on the condition Monday after the Redskins hold their first practice after their 23-3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Bodog sportsbook had set the Redskins as three-point favorites in the game.

NFL betting trends should shift out of the Redskins’ favor if Haynesworth continues to miss practice and games. Washington’s defense is not the same without the former Pro Bowl defensive lineman.

The Post interviewed Dr. Lynne P. Yao, a specialist and chairman-elect of the National Kidney Foundation, who explained the disease as, “a condition in which you have extensive muscle breakdown.” He went on to say,” It doesn’t happen as often in well-conditioned athletes, but if there’s really extreme circumstances — like extremely hot weather — than that could happen. When you have large amounts of muscle breakdown.”

There is a good chance that Haynesworth is experiencing Rhabdomyolysis because he did not attend the team’s offseason workouts. His failure of Shanahan’s physical fitness test was media fodder for days.

Haynesworth played in the third quarter a week ago and against the Ravens, and was disappointed with Shanahan’s placement of him among the third-stringers.

“Third quarter. I’m a ninth-year pro,” Haynesworth said. “I don’t think I should have been out there in the third quarter. But, for having ‘headaches’ again, that was what they wanted to do.”

The Redskins’ Super Bowl XLV line set by the best NFL betting sites rests at +3500. If Haynesworth is not able to perform at his best, look for that line to become even more unfavorable for Washington.
