Sen. Rand Paul's Son William Paul Arrested for Underage Drinking

William Paul, the son of Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, was arrested on Saturday at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

He was charged with disorderly conduct and underage consumption of alcohol, reports the Daily Mail.

Deputies from the Mecklenburh County Sheriff's Office took William Paul into custody and booked him. The 19 year old is scheduled to appear in court on January 8.

Moira Bagley, communications director for Senator Paul, released this following statement: "Senator Paul is a national public figure and subject to scrutiny in the public arena, however, as many parents with teenagers would understand, his family should be afforded the privacy and respect they deserve in a situation such as this."

Bagley did not elaborate on why a criminal arrest deserves "respect."

William Paul was traveling from Lexington, Kentucky to Charlotte on a U.S. Airways flight, where he may have drank alcohol.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Blake Hollar said: "He was possibly served alcohol on the flight."

This arrest did not come at a good time. Senator Paul appeared on 'The Andrea Tantaros Show with Jason Mattera' over the weekend and said he might contemplate a run for the presidency in 2016 as his father Rep. Ron Paul did in 2012: "I haven't said no, and I haven't also said yes."

This 19 year old IS NOT IN

This 19 year old IS NOT IN MILITARY SERVICES. If he were, I might agree that those in our US Armed Forces should be able to drink off duty. This is just another spoiled, indulged brat of negligent parents who felt he was entitled to get illegally intoxicated & act "disorderly". Obnoxious drunk of any age deserve arrest. Parents who do not know what their 19 year old children are doing deserve to be publically exposed, regardless of their profession. Every child is a reflection of his family . This case is no different. The job of journalists are to provide information, especially if it is relevant to the public. They were correct to publish the charges & the Senators comments. The public can make of it what they will.

I don't like Rand Paul... or

I don't like Rand Paul... or pretty much any Libertarians, for their socio-political (and often theological, too) views, at least. But, honestly, why is this a big story?

Paul's office's statement say it all: "Senator Paul is a national public figure and subject to scrutiny in the public arena, however, as many parents with teenagers would understand, his family should be afforded the privacy and respect they deserve in a situation such as this."

Even the best parents can end-up with a son or daughter doing something stupid related to the combination of alcohold, and being young and stupid. So what? Paul and his family deserve, indeed, to just handle the situation in the best way it can, just like any other family; and to be able to concentrate, without distraction from the press, on seeing to it that something ultimately good -- some kind of learning experience, perhaps -- coming from it.

And shame on Michael Allen for this interpretation of Paul's office's statement: "Bagley did not elaborate on why a criminal arrest deserves "respect."

Bagley didn't say it did. She said, as no one who hasn't fallen on his/her head too many times in life could easily see, that the family deserved privacy and respect (as in, the kind of respect which should motivate the press to leave said family alone), not that the crime did.

Paul's got quite enough on his plate, now, having to deal with all this. The press -- including and especially Michael Allen, it would seem -- and public needs to get its collective knee up of his and his family's chest regarding this very private matter.

When one of the Bush twins

When one of the Bush twins tried to use a fake ID at the nightclub I worked at, we only confiscated the license with no arrest. It would have made bigger news if the secret service guys with her tried to allow her to break the law.
