White Honor Killing: Laura Wilson Murdered By Ashtiaq Ashgar After Exposing Their Relationship To His Family

| by

In Britain’s first white honor killing, a 17-year-old was stabbed to death next to a canal in Rotherham, South Yorkshire by her boyfriend who felt she brought shame to his family.

Laura Wilson was in love with Ashtiaq Ashgar, 21, who is currently serving a life sentence for the 2010 murder of Wilson.

The relationship that took a tragic turn was retold on Wednesday’s episode of Britain’s “Darkest Taboos” on the Crime and Investigation Network.

“She loved him. She worshipped the ground he walked on, she really did. She would have done anything for him,” Wilson’s sister, Sarah, recalled.

The couple began their relationship at school in 2008, when Laura was 15 and Ashtiaq was 16. Ashgar’s family, however, were planning an arranged marriage for him with a girl from Pakistan.

But Ashgar had numerous relationships with women, including Wilson, according to Mail Online. When Wilson found out about his other relationships, she broke up with him and slept with his married friend Ishaq “Zac” Hussein to make her former lover jealous.

She became pregnant, had a daughter, Alicia, and soon after she and Ashgar rekindled their relationship. But Wilson grew tired of having to keep their relationship a secret from his family and took matters into her own hands.

Wilson and her sister revealed the relationship to his family, including to his mother, who was furious.

“Laura told her that she wanted to marry him, but his mother got aggressive and hit her with a shoe, calling her a “dirty white b****.”

Ashgar, embarrassed and ashamed, asked Wilson to meet him at the canal one night on October 2010, stabbing her more than 40 times.

Police charged Ashgar and Hussein, who Ashgar told about his decision to kill Wilson, with murder. Both men initially pleaded not guilty, but after changing his plea to guilty; Ashgar was ordered to 17 and a half years in jail.

“He showed no remorse, just upset at the amount of time got in jail,” Wilson’s mother, Maggie, said.

The Honour Based Violence Network reports there are 12 honor killings per year in the U.K. Police said the murder was the country’s first white honor killing.

“I think it as all about shame,” Detective Superintendent Mick Mason said. “In their eyes, Laura had brought shame on the family by coming round. Their son had also brought shame on their family.”

Following a retrial, Hussein was acquitted of the crime. Ashgar is now serving a life sentence and will be eligible for parole in 2029.

“He’s going to be out in 2029… he can still get out and get married and have kids and have a good life,” Sarah said. “My sister can’t.”

Maggie and Sarah are now raising Wilson’s daughter, Alicia.
