Stunning Counter Protest Leaves Westboro Baptist Church Speechless

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

The Westboro Baptist Church held its first protest since the death of church founder Fred Phelps on Friday, but a counter-protest across the street left them perplexed.

Rather than fighting fire with fire, counter-protestors outside a Lorde concert in Kansas City, Mo., held up a sign that read, “Sorry for your loss.”

"We realized that it wasn't so much about antagonizing them, but sending out the counter message that we are here for people who need that message and need that positivity," counter-protestor Megan Coleman told KSHB-TV.

The message was lost on some church members.

"I don't even know what they're saying," said WBC spokesman Steve Drain, who claimed last weekend that the excommunicated Pastor Phelps was not close to death.

Phelps died on Wednesday.

The group held up another sign for non-WBC members that read, “Live your life and be awesome.”
