Pop star Selena Gomez stirred up controversy over pictures of herself showing what some say is disrespect at a mosque in Abu Dhabi.
Two different pictures have sparked controversy online during the singer’s recent trip to the nation. In one picture, posted by Gomez herself, she is seen posing at Abu Dhabi’s Grand Mosque dressed in the traditional hijab, but the subtle reveal of her ankle is seen by some to be disrespectful to the religion and culture.
In another picture, posted by Kendall Jenner, Gomez is shown posing with Jenner, Cody Simpson, Gigi Hadid, Shay Mitchell, and others outside of the mosque. Those in the group appear to smiling, laughing, and having fun, but the mosque’s rules for visitors specifically state that such behavior is not allowed.
Users on social media immediately blasted the starlet.
“Disrespectful! It's a religion (sic) place not a place to have fun in, so disappointed,” wrote user Alaa Almitwally on Instagram.
“If their intent was to learn about Islam they wouldn't be posing like they were standing outside and amusement park,” wrote another user, Ayisha Elturk. “I like Selena Gomez but to have her do something like this makes me no longer a fan.”
Do you think Gomez’s behavior was disrespectful?
