Nebraska Mayor Accused of Cursing at Atheist Over Religious Memorial Day Event

The group Omaha Atheists claims that La Vista, Neb., Mayor Douglas Kindig blew off one of their members with the F-word.

According to the Friendly Atheist blog, Mayor Kindig attended a "Faith & Freedom Day" on Sunday at La Vista Central Park, which included a breakfast with members of the U.S. military and their families. There was also a Memorial Day service by Walter Hooker, an associate pastor from a local church.

At the event, Omaha Atheists board member Robert Fuller asked Mayor Kindig why the city was paying for a religious event and if they could meet to discuss possible church and state violations.

A press release by the Omaha Atheists claims Mayor Kindig’s response was, "Take me to f------ court because I don’t care," and "Minorities are not going to run my city."

Fuller later said, “Such an emotional reaction was shocking and I was baffled. I don’t understand what being a minority has to do with anyone’s right to be heard by their mayor.”

Meagan Wilson, president of Omaha Atheists, said in a statement:

Mr. Kindig’s comments are insulting and dismissive of the rights of citizens to bring concerns to their elected officials. He clearly has strong opinions about this topic, but we are saddened and concerned that he would rather demand legal action that wastes taxpayer resources than have a respectful conversation.

In 2012, Mayor Kindig told the Papillion Times, “I am willing to listen to our citizens because they are the ones suppose [sic] to direct our future.”
