Israeli Soldier’s Ham Sandwich Almost Lands Him In Military Prison

An Israeli soldier was almost sent to a military prison for bringing a ham sandwich onto an army base.

According to Religious News Service, the solider, who immigrated to Israel from Boston, brought the sandwich (made by his grandmother) on the base, which adheres to Jewish kosher dietary laws.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) initially sentenced the soldier to 11 days in a military jail.

According to Haaretz Daily Newspaper, "After an Israel Radio reporter asked the IDF Spokesperson's Unit to comment, however, it was decided that the soldier would not be sent to jail, but rather would not receive his upcoming weekend leave."

However, that punishment was also dropped because of media coverage spurred on by the man's relatives and the advocacy of a lawmaker, noted the Associated Press.

IDF spokesman Brig. Gen. Motti Almoz reportedly wrote on Facebook:

We were wrong. The IDF will continue to keep kosher on the one hand, but will not probe a soldier’s sandwich on the other. There are tensions in Israeli society and there are different stances and opinions. There is room for everyone in the IDF.
