The Coalition for Reason has placed billboards in Sioux Falls, Brookings, Vermillion, Rapid City and Spearfish, S.D., that read: "Don't believe in God? Join the club."

The coalition is an alliance of seven atheists groups in South Dakota and is reaching out to like-minded people.

Amanda Novotny, president of Siouxland Freethinkers, who is part of the coalition, defended the godless billboards.

"The main goal of these billboards is to let them know that they're not alone," Novotny told The Christian Post. "Not only are they not alone in this conservative state, but there are groups that they can join to meet like-minded individuals. We're your friends and family. We're people that you already know."

He added: "We have felt a lot of support, either from people that share the same world view, or people that understand that one of the things that make America so great is freedom of speech. These billboards have sparked a lot of discussion, which is great."

The billboards will remain up through Sept. 15.
