A Palestinian teen who was kidnapped and killed in Jerusalem Wednesday appears to have been burned alive, according to an autopsy report.
"The direct cause of death was burns as a result of fire and it's complications," Palestinian Attorney-General Mohammed Al-A'wewy told Palestinian official news agency Wafa late Friday.
Many suspect the murder of Mohammed Abu Khudair, 16, was carried out by far-right leaning Jews seeking revenge for the kidnapping and murders of three Israeli teens last month, officials said.
Khudair had burns over 90 percent of his body.
Al-A'wewy said Saber Al-Aloul, the director of the Palestinian forensic institute, found soot in the boy’s respiratory canal, which indicates "the boy had inhaled this material while he was burnt alive."
Khudair’s funeral was held on Friday with many Palestinians chanting “Intifada! Intifada!”, calling for an uprising against Israel, the New York Daily News reported.
A group of protestors threw stones at Israeli police, who responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the teen’s death “loathsome” and ordered investigators to work swiftly. Israeli authorities have said they are unsure whether Khudair was a victim of a hate crime.
