American Atheists, Inc. announces the first “Year Of the Bible” billboard in Harrisburg, PA., sponsored in part by The Pennsylvania Nonbelievers. This first billboard can be seen starting March 1st, 2012 at the intersection of 13th Street and Paxton St. It was designed by American Atheists, Inc. Pennsylvania State Director, Ernest Perce V. The design references Colossians 3:22, which reads, “Slaves obey your masters.”
The controversial image of a slave bound in chains sends the message that the House of Representatives should not be celebrating a barbaric and Bronze Age book. We do not in any way condone slavery, but the bible does. The United States has outgrown such hideous actions toward humanity.
It has been said that the fastest path to atheism is the actual reading of the bible, and while the target audience of our billboard is “closeted” atheists, we also direct the message to those who support the “Year of The Bible.” We want those supporters to recognize the application of their scripture and how awful the bible can be when it is critically examined. We especially want the “in-the-pew” atheists to begin questioning why they are continuing the charade of going to church and giving their money in support of teaching from the bible.
The billboard is leased for the 30 day period beginning March 1, 2012, and allows fellow atheists to know that both local and national organizations out there for them. The Billboard is designed to portray just one of the barbaric lessons the bible teaches, and we understand that it is controversial and may appear offensive. However, regardless of one’s theological views, we should all support Freedom of Speech. The real offensiveness comes from those who say we do not have the right to be offensive. Other events that are unfolding in Pennsylvania serve as examples of what happens when freedom of speech is trumped.
Here is a graphical rendition (see comments below)…
While we appreciate comments on accuracy in grammar and spelling, please note that the image above is a graphical draft, and we acknowledge that it does contain a typo. Understand, as well, that any billboard that contains a typo will not be erected and we will be posting actual snapshots of the billboard once it is erected. We used this graphical representation because it is the only one we have at the moment. Again, this is not the actual billboard.
Several members of Pennsylvania Nonbelievers will hold a press conference underneath the billboard. They may be further contacted at 717-467-1266
