Pope Francis Is New Mafia Target, Warns Top Italian Official

Pope Francis, who many say is the most progressive of all the Popes so far, is now a target for the Italian mafia after crusading against corruption.

Italian prosecutor Nicola Gratteri warned that there is a serious threat against Pope Francis’s life because of the pontiff’s stance against corruption and organized crime.

“I cannot say if the organization is in a position to do something like this, but they are dangerous and it is worth reflecting on,” said Gratteri. “If the godfathers can find a way to stop him, they will seriously consider it. Those who have up until now profited from the influence and wealth drawn from the church are getting very nervous. For many years, the mafia has laundered money and made investments with the complicity of the church. But now the pope is dismantling the poles of economic power in the Vatican, and that is dangerous.”

Top Italian Mafia group ‘Ndrangheta is at the center of Pope Francis’s crusade to fight corruption and organized crime. The group has reportedly had a comfortable relationship with the Catholic Church in the past, but after a recent sermon from the Pope that harshly denounced corruption, officials are worried that the group may attempt to harm the Pope. In his sermon, Pope Francis referred to his crusade against the Mafia by quoting Jesus, who said, “It would be better for [the corrupt man] if a millstone were put around his neck and he be thrown into the sea.”

Strangely enough, the majority of Mafia members are practicing Catholics, and even those that are in jail are completely devoted to the religion. Gratteri says that most don’t see the work of the Mafia to be wrong, so they aren’t taking it well that Pope Francis is actively working to end what they do.
