A Muslim woman is generating substantial controversy after admitting that she voted for Donald Trump.
"I'm a Muslim, a woman and an immigrant. I voted for Trump." That’s what Asra Nomani said in an article published by the Washington Post, declaring herself to be one of President-elect Donald Trump’s “silent supporters.”
Nomani, a self-described “liberal Muslim” who has worked as a journalist for the Wall Street Journal and other national newspapers, was born in India and immigrated to the United States in 1969 when she was 4 years old.
“I support the Democratic Party’s position on abortion, same-sex marriage and climate change,” she explained. However, she says that President Obama’s economic policies did not help her.

“I am a single mother who can’t afford health insurance under Obamacare,” she said. “The president’s mortgage-loan modification program, ‘HOPE NOW,’ didn’t help me. Tuesday, I drove into Virginia from my hometown of Morgantown, W.Va., where I see rural America and ordinary Americans, like me, still struggling to make ends meet, after eight years of the Obama administration.”
She also disapproved of Obama and Hillary Clinton’s rhetoric regarding terrorism, explaining, “I have been opposed to the decision by President Obama and the Democratic Party to tap dance around the ‘Islam’ in Islamic State.”
Obama’s opponents have frequently criticized him for refusing to utter the phrase “radical Islamic terrorism” when referring to terrorist acts.
As NBC explained, “Obama and his secretary of state, John Kerry, have said that they don't use terms like ‘Islamic extremism’ or ‘radical Islam’ because they believe doing so would grant undeserved religious legitimacy to terrorist movements such as the Islamic State.”

"They are not religious leaders -- they're terrorists," Obama has said. "And we are not at war with Islam. We are at war with people who have perverted Islam."
Normani cited a tweet of Trump's following the March massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando: “Is President Obama going to finally mention the words radical Islamic terrorism? If he doesn’t he should immediately resign in disgrace!”
The final straw for Nomani was the release of internal campaign emails by Wikileaks. “The revelations of multimillion-dollar donations to the Clinton Foundation from Qatar and Saudi Arabia killed my support for Clinton,” she wrote.
In one email, Clinton acknowledged that U.S. allies Qatar and Saudi Arabia provide support for terrorism writing, “We need to use our diplomatic and more traditional intelligence assets to bring pressure on the governments of Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which are providing clandestine financial and logistic support to ISIL and other radical Sunni groups in the region.”
Concluding, Nomani said that “I have absolutely no fears about being a Muslim in a ‘Trump America.’ The checks and balances in America and our rich history of social justice and civil rights will never allow the fear-mongering that has been attached to candidate Trump’s rhetoric to come to fruition.”
