A restaurant in Winooski, Vermont decided to take down a sign after some members of the community were offended by its use of the word bacon.
Sneakers Bistro put up a sign that read, “Yield For Sneakers Bacon” on a lamppost as part of the city’s “Operation Bloom.” The program was put in place to help keep flower beds maintained, and businesses that take part in gardening are allowed to put up an advertisement where they do it. Sneakers Bistro decided to put up what they believed to be a harmless sign, but after a local Muslim woman expressed that she was offended by their use of the word bacon, they decided to take it down.
Reports say that the woman felt that using the word bacon on a public sign was offensive to those who didn’t eat pork for religious reasons, and her online post prompted the restaurant to remove the sign and reach out to woman.
On Saturday, Sneakers Bistro took to their Facebook page to address the issue.
“We are here to serve people BREAKFAST, not politics,” reads the Facebook post. “We removed the sign that was located on public property as a gesture of respect for our diverse community. There were also concerns raised about safety. Removing it was not a difficult decision. We still love bacon. We still love eggs. Please have the political conversation elsewhere.”
Winooski’s city manager Katherine Decarreau spoke on behalf of the city, saying that this is something that could come up in a community as diverse as theirs.
“The cool part of living in a diverse community is that it's not always comfortable,” said Decarreau. “It's a fascinating place with lots of opportunities for conversation. The City has to pay attention to a lot of factors while acting within what we can regulate.”
The woman who posted online has yet to speak out about what’s transpired
