Mormons in "same-gender" marriages will be classified as apostates, and their kids will be banned from blessings, baptisms and other activities, per new church policies.

The new rules appear in a guidebook for lay leaders, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

Blogger John Dehlin, who was previously kicked out of the Mormon church, recently posted the new rules on his Facebook page, which fueled outrage among commenters.

"It is sad for the many legally married LGBT Mormons will now likely be hunted down and threatened with the inhumane and barbaric LDS disciplinary council process — for the sole act of legally entering into a loving, committed relationship with a person of their choosing," Dehlin told the Friendly Atheist.

"While [the church] respects the law of the land and acknowledges the right of others to think and act differently, it does not perform or accept same-sex marriage within its membership," Mormon church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a written statement, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Troy Williams, executive director of the pro-LGBT group Equality Utah, told the newspaper that churches should be able to "welcome or exclude" people, but added: "We know that children of same-sex parents are treasures of infinite worth. In our universe, all God's children have a place in the choir."

The new rules also state that natural or adopted children of gay parents (married or cohabiting) are not to receive a naming blessing. Additionally, they may not be baptized, confirmed or ordained into the priesthood or get a recommendation to do missionary work without getting permission from church leaders.

Requirements for a child to get that permission include committing themselves to church doctrine, specifically disavowing "the practice of same-gender cohabitation and marriage," and not living with same-sex parents (at age 18 or older).

Two gay Mormon advocacy groups, Affirmation and Mama Dragons, both expressed their sadness and displeasure over the new rules.
