The Liberty Counsel, a Christian law firm that represented Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis in her unsuccessful legal fight not to issue same-sex marriage licenses, wants Davis to be named as TIME magazine's "Person of the Year."

"Who more than Kim Davis has influenced the news in the past year?" The Liberty Counsel posted on its website on Dec. 2. "Kim Davis inspired a nation and the world to fight for religious liberty when she chose a prison cell rather than sacrificing her conscience."

According to Right Wing Watch, Liberty Counsel founder and Davis' lawyer Mat Staver sent out an email that stated: "She joins a long list of people who were imprisoned for their conscience. People who today we admire like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, Jan Huss, John Bunyan, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and others like them. Each had their own cause, but they all shared the same resolve not to violate their consciences."

Historical villains have also made the cover of TIME's "Person Of The Year," including Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin (twice), Nikita Khrushchev and the Ayatollah Khomeini.
