Florida Mother Target of Islamophobic Road Rage

A Florida mother of Muslim faith said Wednesday that her religion was the motivation behind a 20-mile road rage pursuit.

The woman, who identified herself only as Rose, had her 4-year-old and 1-year-old in the car when a man in a black pick-up truck began to pursue her.

“He grabs a red flannel shirt from his passenger seat and he takes it,” Rose said. “He wraps it around his head, holds it under his chin and starts wiggling his head like this, obviously to imitate my head scarf.”

The man crossed the double yellow line to pass her, then swerved twice into her lane. He forced her off of the road and tailed her for another 20 miles before giving up.

During the pursuit Rose attempted to call police, trying to talk to the operator over the terrifying sound of her children screaming.

Authorities have apparently identified a subject and consider the case an aggravated assault, according to the Orlando Sentinel, though Rose said that the sheriff’s deputy who responded to her call drove past the man in the pick-up truck without detaining him.

Rose believes the attack was a hate crime.
