| by Brendan Kelly

“In God We Trust” decals are spreading across Texas as yet another police department has made the decision to add the national motto to their patrol cars.

Counties throughout Texas have been placing “In God We Trust” decals on patrol vehicles since the Childress Police Department started the trend in 2015.

On Jan. 30, the Ector County Sheriff's Office became the latest department to make the addition. All 30 marked patrol vehicles belonging to the sheriffs office will display the phrase within the week.

"We just feel like that this is something that needs to be seen,” Ector County Sheriff Mark Donaldson told KWES. “This is a community ... of people that do trust in God and we just feel like with the job that we do, that we need to have God on our side.”

Sheriff Donaldson said that he and his department strongly believe in the project.

“Our money has the term, ‘In God We Trust’ on all of our U.S. currency, so if it’s good enough for our currency it’s certainly good enough for vehicles that our deputies drive around in,” the sheriff said.

Sheriff Donaldson says that he made the decision to place the decals himself about one month ago.

The Midland County Sheriff's Office has announced plans to join Ector County in placing the national motto on their patrol cars within the next month. Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter told EverythingLubbock.com, “I’m not afraid of it and we’re going to put it on there.”
