Video: One Million Moms Calls for Boycott of JCPenney over Ellen DeGeneres Christmas Ad

article image

Conservative Christian activist group One Million Moms is asking Christians to boycott JCPenney (again) because talk show host and lesbian Ellen DeGeneres appears in a Christmas TV ad (video below) for the retailer.

In the JCPenney ad, DeGeneres jokes with elves, reports RawStory.com.

In response, One Million Moms wrote on their website: “Since April, JC Penney’s has not aired Ellen DeGeneres in one of their commercials until now. A new JCP ad features Ellen and three elves. JCP has made their choice to offend a huge majority of their customers again. Christians must now vote with their wallets.”

Ellen is someone I had

Ellen is someone I had formerly liked, and now that she called you haters I am not happy with her. I already knew she is an avowed atheist and that alone makes it ridiculous to be a Christmas spokesperson.

JC Penny you take your JC initials too seriously. Ellen, I had been avoiding your show when you started having Adam Lambert and every other Illuminati and sexual deviant as well as far left actor, politician business person on. You do not realize that sin panders to you but only Christians would really forgive and love you. Oh by the way that would be AGAPE love.

One Hundred Morons is a much

One Hundred Morons is a much more accurate, if slightly less catchy, name for their "organization". For all the resulting effects of their boycotts, you'd think that JCP was actually who was behind them - every time they get their panties in a twist, JCP's profits jump a few points.

Not that I have a problem with anything that brings us closer to extinguishing the practice of religion in public.

Umm... has anyone bothered to

Umm... has anyone bothered to actually COUNT the so-called "million" moms, lately? Are we sure there are still that many; or that there ever were?

I ask because the polling numbers clearly suggest that those against homosexuality in America -- against same-sex marriage, even -- is the minority; that virtually no one under age 35 is against it. On ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos," this morning, even the conservative George Will said that it's only "old people" (his words, not mine) who are against the LGBT community; and conservative Matthew Dowd told of how only five years ago if you asked 100 soldiers if gays should be allowed in the military, 80 would have said "no"; yet today, with his son having entered the military, clearly 80 now say "yes."

The US Supreme Court, this very week, decided to hear both DOMA and Prop 8; and pundits universally agree that it's at least, in part, because the Court feels it's finally "safe" to so do... again, the conservative George Will's opinion.

The opinions of such as the so-called "million" moms is fast becoming even less than irrelevant... if it ever even was. Let's not forget that the last time they raised this very issue with this very woman and this very department store chain, said chain's CEO responded by openly and fully supporting DeGeneres and his decision to use her services; and, in fact, he even doubled-down on it by increasing her exposure...

...evidencing that JCP believes, in no uncertain terms, that it is, by no stretch of the imagination, "a huge majority of their customers" who either are offended, or even share the moms' outdated and ridiculous opinion.

This story, alas, is no longer even worthy of the newsprint on which it's printed, or the data bytes required for us to either read about or comment on it.

You might want to double

You might want to double check your numbers if you think that, "virtually no one under 35," is opposed to homosexuality. You might find that you are further off from accurate numbers than are the million moms.

That said...the million moms are demonstrating the worst sort of mob behavior and deserve every bit of scorn that they get.

DesElms's picture

@Ashen_X: You're right that

@Ashen_X: You're right that the phrase "virtually no one" went too far. I used that precise phrase simply because that's precisely the phrase that George Wi... er... wait a minute... maybe it was Matthew Dowd (can't remember at the moment) used; and to whose words I referred in the very next sentences. Since I was in that referential mode, I unthinkingly inserted as my words, here, those which were actually others', elsewhere. My bad.

There is no question, though, that relatively few persons under age 35 -- and especially under age 30 -- have any problem, at all, with anyone being gay. They just don't. Even when their numbers are combined with what one would normally think would be the statistically-diluting over-age-35 members of society, all the polls clearly show that the majority of Americans are now in favor of, for example, same-sex marriage.

So I wasn't really "further off" at all. Only a small number of young people are troubled by homosexuality, and that's just factually accurate. However, my use of the phrase "virtually no one" went, indeed, too far. The gay-hating minority is not yet THAT small...

...but just give it time.

@SAM-1: Part of the reason

@SAM-1: Part of the reason we -- er... well... many of us, around here, at least -- put the handle/alias of the person who whom we're responding, preceded by the "@" symbol, and a colon, at the beginning of the reply is so that precisely to whom we're replying is crystal clear. The reason, in part, is that sometimes people click on the wrong "reply" link and end-up replying to the wrong posting...

...which I'm guessing is the case, here. I didn't, after all, use the word "haters" in anything I've written, here. Moreover, nothing you wrote seems to respond to anything I wrote.

So, in the future, SAM-1, please both make sure you click on the "reply" link that's at the bottom of the post to which you're replying; and also, to make extra sure that it's clear to everyone to whom you're replying, put his/her name, handle or alias at the beginning of said reply... kinda' like I've done in this one. Or you could just put their handle, then a comma, then double-CR/LF down and continue... like in a more traditional note or letter. Either way is fine.

Just tryin' to help.

Oh, I'm sure their are as

Oh, I'm sure their are as many rude, obnoxious Gay people to dislike as straight people, but that's has nothing to do with their sexual orientation (though, honestly, I never personally met any unlikeable Gay person). It is nice to see so many people supporting Ellen DeGeneres' right to work. That is really ALL THIS IS ABOUT. One Million Mom's is not upset over anything Ellen says in this ad for JCP, they only object to having a Gay person appear in their ad. Is it their goal to put every homosexual on unemployment? Do they actually think refusing to let Gay people earn a living will change their sexual orientation? Then exactly what is their point? Simply to punish these "sinners" & everyone who supports their right to be free, equal Americans. There are many worse sins than to love someone of the same sex & people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

Ellen DeGeneres is a terrific role model. No one could ask for a nicer spokeswoman for their product, their store or for for their group. I believe in "voting with your wallet", but don't have to be a JC Penney shopper to send them a quick email, text or letter expressing your support.

I'm sick and tired of these

I'm sick and tired of these self-righteous organizations that go around trying to speak for all Christians or all Americans on pushing their anti-gay marriage agenda or boycotting JCP because Ellen DeGeneres appears in a Christmas TV ad for the retailer. These pompous people are so un-American and un-Christian in their values of hatred and intolerance. I don't know why One Million Mom's isn't yet listed as an official "hate group" because that is what they are. When I see the joyous faces of people getting married, particularly the elderly Lesbian couple, I say to myself, happiness of couples should come first. Marriage is a civil legal event. A minority of religious bigots cannot impose its will on the rest of this society. This intolerance must end, and it must end NOW! I hope legalization of marriage for all couples straight, etc will become the norm of this magnificient secular and civil society. America is great, but only if we are willing to maintain and protect the US Constitution and its values of Equality Under the Law.

According to Wikipedia, "One Million Moms" (OMM) and "One Million Dads" are both websites started by the American Family Association (AFA) which has been deemed a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

I was familiar with both OMM and AFA, but had no idea just how much AFA had attempted to do (and has done). The Wikipedia article about the AFA was definitely an eye opener.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Family_Association

I contacted JC Penney corporate today to voice my hopes they wouldn't cave to pressure by these people and was pleased to hear they had received a number of similar calls.

So was the bit about hate groups on the Southern Poverty Law center site or just on Wikipedia (which pretty much anyone can edit)?

If true, what authority do they have to designate hate groups?

@Gregandrene

The SPLC is a non-profit civil rights organization founded in the early 70s. They classify as hate groups organizations that it considers "have beliefs or practices that attack or malign an entire class of people, typically for their immutable characteristics."

Kerry asked why OMM had not been "listed as an official hate group". They have been. It's up to the individual to determine whether or not one agrees with that designation.

Wikipedia articles have cited references so typically verifying information listed is an easy process.

Ms. Berger,

Gays have the same rights are heterosexual people...they want ADDITIONAL rights. Anybody in America can marry the opposite sexed person of their choice. A heterosexual person cannot marry a person of the same sex nor can a homosexual person. The rights are the same...the Constitution has been upheld (there is NO distinction for "sexual" deviation/discrimination)...the "intolerance has ended".

God Bless!

Steve Boyd's picture

@carolandv: Oh, I don't know

@carolandv: Oh, I don't know why I bother with you anymore, but sometimes you're so offensive to me that I have to comment.

Your premise here entirely hangs on the wrong-headed opinion that homosexuality or heterosexuality is a choice one makes. As a gay man who has many gay friends, I can tell you that it most assuredly is not a choice and your whole argument falls apart.

If you believe that sexual orientation is a choice, when did you decide to be a heterosexual? I mean, there must have been a day that you sat and wrestled within yourself whether you would be straight or gay, wasn't there? Or were you just born with the sexual orientation that you are?

Religious beliefs and intolerance are choices, not sexual orientation.

Raptorcat's picture

@Carolandv; So then you are

@Carolandv; So then you are saying that gays have the right to get married, are entitled to surviving spouse benefits, to adopt children?

WRONG.

In many states and under the current (and unconstitutional) DOMA law, they do NOT have the same rights as the straight portion of our society has.

They are not asking for anything more than the IDENTICAL rights that YOU and I both enjoy. Rights that you, very clearly, do not appreciate.

That is not asking for MORE rights, but asking for THE SAME rights.

Your argument is both specious and capricious in it's intent as well as being intellectually dishonest. To be honest, I, for one, have grown tired of your continuous dishonesty.

The least that you could do is to be honest and truthful, and if that is too painful to your precious religious sensitivities, then it is time to re-evaluate your religion.

The insanity principle is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. The far right, the far left, vegans, creationists and other extremists believe in the insanity principle, religiously.

I believe that any consenting

I believe that any consenting adult should be allowed to marry another consenting adult, regardless of gender.

That said...actually a homosexual person does currently have the same right to marry a member of the opposite sex that heterosexual person does.

Both a heterosexual person and a homosexual person have the same, "IDENTICAL rights," (as you put it) to marry a member of the opposite gender.

What should be changed (removed actually), in my opinion, is the restriction of opposite gender. We should all have the right to marry the consenting adult of our (and theirs of course) choice, without any mention of gender.

Savannah's picture

@Ashen I agree. People that

@Ashen

I agree. People that believe it ends the discussion by saying all have the right to marry a person on the opposite sex are, in my opinion, simply trying to rationalize discrimination.

Polygamy is another example of something that is illegal, but why? I'd be interested to hear any reasons for opposing it that aren't religion based. It's not a choice I would make, but I really can't come up with anything against it should others wish to pursue it.

Exactly. If they are going to claim that people can't have marriages that aren't spelled out in their bible, then they can't stop people from having marriages that ARE in their bible.
