Video: Debunked Historian David Barton Rewrites Jesus Christ's Words to Attack U.S Tax System

article image

Debunked Christian historian David Barton recently appeared on the TV program 'Fixing The Money Thing' with Gary and Drenda Keesee, where he rewrote the words of Jesus Christ in order to attack the U.S. tax system, which he believes taxes the wealthy too much, reports RightWingWatch.org (video below).

First, Barton quoted Luke 19:26, which says: "I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away" and then literally rewrote Jesus' words on the air.

Barton said: "Jesus' position is that if you can turn a profit, we're gonna red ward you for turning a profit. If you're not productive, we're not gonna reward you."

Barton then attacked the U.S. tax code: "Now what we do with our tax code today is we say 'the more profit you turn, the more we're going to penalize you. The less productive you are, the more we're going to give you.'"

Barton then falsely claimed that only the industries which were government-regulated failed in 2008 and had to be bailed out through TARP and the Stimulus Package while "the free market did pretty good."

What Barton failed to mention is that every industry in the U.S. is regulated to a certain degree.

So before you buy a top rated

So before you buy a top rated vacuum cleaner make sure you know what type of vacuum cleaner is best for your needs.Allergy sufferers should only consider using HEPA filters. These are very effective in getting out ground in dirt.Air watts are calculated using the formula, (Air Flow (in CFM) x Vacuum (in inches of water lift))/8.Once again, there is some question as to whether this is a useful specification or just a new rating to further confuse consumers and make comparisons difficult.

Isn't there one of those

Isn't there one of those commandment doohickeys that covers making up stuff and attributing it to people who didn't say it? I guess Mr. Barton just bought his own ticket to the Hell he apparently craves to have exist.

Maybe you need to read Jesus'

Maybe you need to read Jesus' parable on the talents which Barton referes to here. Obviously you didn't recognize that he quoted the next to last verse of this parable's passage in Matthew 25:14-30.

Remember the outcome? Two where rewarded because they made a profit; and the other who hid his, and who then had it taken away and he was cast out of the LORD's kingdom.

Hmmmm... no rewriting there. You folks need to read your bibles on your own instead of taking other people's here-say opinions as fact.

michaelz's picture

You people don't even listen

You people don't even listen to the video do you? Michael Allen completely misquotes David Barton in the video.

This is what was said,

David Barton, "Jesus' position is that if you can turn a profit we're going to reward you, for turning a profit. If you're non-productive we're not going to reward you."

This isn't rewriting Jesus' words, but interpreting the intent and meaning of what Jesus said. Which is right in line with biblical context. Sorry if this convicts you lazy gluttons of your sin, and you covetous types who want what others have without working to earn it yourself!

then he says, now pay close attention here!:

"Now what WE do with OUR tax code today, we say, 'The more profit you turn we're going to penalize you, the less productive you are the more we're going to give you.'"

David Barton in no way ever twisted Jesus' words. He compares what Jesus taught and what OUR government's tax laws are doing!

The main industries Barton is referring to is Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fannie_Mae_and_Freddie_Mac:_A_Bibliography

Get it right folks.

You only hear what you want to hear. Try again, idiots!

I'm no fan of his, but Newt

I'm no fan of his, but Newt Gingrich would kick Barton's ass about knowledge of the Founding Fathers. Barton is a 100% douch bag. Newt has forgotten more about the Founding Fathers, than Barton will ever know. Newt has a BA in history from Emory University and a MA & PhD in History from Tulane University.

I thought this site was

I thought this site was called OPPOSING VIEWS for offering a VARIETY of unpopular viewpoint articles, to promote discussion. However, it has turned into another liberal rant site, mostly bashing the GOP or conservatives in article after article or pushing a liberal theme in one thing or another. What a disappointment. I don't mind hearing from both sides - that can lead to real solutions, but this is nothing but a propaganda hack site now.

DesElms's picture

This website scrolls NewsMax

This website scrolls NewsMax headlines in a box on the right-hand side of every single page. NewsMax is known to be FOX-NEWS-CHANNEL-like in its being so to the Right that it's almost the propaganda arm of the Republican party and conservatives. How, then, could this website possibly be the bastion of liberalism that you so wrongly suggest? I've seen PLENTY of uncritical articles about the GOP and conservatives, around here.

Conservatives always claim/complain that media -- pretty much all media, except maybe for the likes of FOX and NewsMax -- is to liberal. And that, of course, is because such media, if it does its job, exposes the Right's bad behavior and ridiculous ideas. Those on the Right have become too accustomed to such as FOX unabashedly lying even when the truth fits better. Truth is the enemy of those on the Right.

And, by the way, OPPOSING VIEWS's job has never been to offer "a variety of unpopular viewpoint articles, to promote discussion." For such purposes, the word "unpopular" isn't even definable. One man's ceiling is another man's floor; one man's unpopular is another man's... well... you get the point. It's all relative. So how could this -- or any other -- website's purpose possibly be what you just described? In order to be anything even akin to that, to whom said articles are unpopular would have to be specified.

You're a conservative, and so the articles, here, it sounds like, aren't sufficiently unpopular to at least you; and so they're not in keeping with what you thought was OPPOSING VIEWS's purpose. But, again, any website that isn't a Republican echo chamber, like FOX and NewsMax, will ALWAYS be a disappointment to your likes... because there's too much truth-telling going on on them. That's why your ilk wants to stop funding public broadcasting, because there's too much truth-telling. If it were FOX being so funded, you'd scream bloody murder at a presidential candidate promising it would end said funding as Romney did in the first debate.

Moreover, your very complaint belies what you claim. You DO mind hearing from both sides. You're upset because this website doesn't, in your opinion, officially espouse enough of YOUR side. You don't want to read BOTH sides. You want to read YOUR side. So you're not interested in solutions. You're interested in more of your Right-winged, (Insani)Tea-Party crap!

The GOP and conservatives NEED to be bashed... in article after article... here and everywhere. They need to be shown for what they truly are, as the very "liberal" media you all so hate is so good at doing. The GOP and conservatives are about deregulation so that banks can bankrupt Americans as we're still all reeling from their having just done; they're about pejoratively characterizing as "entitlements" the safety nets that evidence our humanity and caring for those who can't take care of themselves, and trying to do away with them; they're about racism, and sexism and denying basic civil and economic rights to women and the LGBT community; they say they want government out of people's personal lives, but only if said personal lives don't include things they hate, like homosexuality, same-sex marriage, or abortion... speaking of which, they deny funding to such as Planned Parenthood because it performs abortions, and throw out the baby with the bathwater by also, in the process, denying basic healthcare, such as breast and cervical exams to the women who rely on Planned Parenthood for those things, too! By denying a woman's right to choose, the GOP and conservatives wish to ensure that women who wanted to terminate their pregnancies so that they wouldn't have to raise a child in poverty are guaranteed that that's what will happen; and then because she and her child will rely on what the GOP and conservatives pejoratively call "entitlements," which they want to stop, the GOP and conservatives demonstrate how they love the fetus, but hate the child, and can still sleep at night.

The GOP and conservatives think only of either themselves, or others who will benefit them. They WANT the middle-class to go away, and for there to be only rich and poor, like both in this country's not-so-distant past, and like some countries have only ever known. If they have their climate-change-denying way, the polar ice caps will melt, resulting in five or more meters of sea level rise, and they will blame it on liberals. If they have their way, people without the ability to pay for proper healthcare -- or possibly even any healthcare at all -- will literally die for lack of it; and those who've paid for their entire working lives into the Social Security system will have their money privately controlled, and so it will go to the robber barrens of the likes who used TARP and bailout money to give themselves raises rather than that which they were charged to do with it when it was given to them.

I could go on, and on, and on...

...but it's all just wated on your likes. You refuse to see what's right there in front of you. And by it, you wish others harm... genuine harm. The desires an acts of such as you have real consequences in the lives of real people. It's not all just theoretical. People are actually and really harmed by the GOP and conservatives. Trickle down is a myth. Privatization is corrupt. The (Insani)Tea Party lies; and is as dangerous to the United States as any enemy it has ever faced because it is happy to bring this nation to its knees with its intransigence, thinking, stupidly, that it can then rebuild this nation in a better way.

I get so angry and depressed about it all that it sometimes almost literally brings me to my knees in despair. Shame on the lot of you for your lying manipulations and ill will. Trust me, websites like this NEED to be exposing the genuine and unmitigated awfulness of the GOP and conservatives. Truth win out!

I believe what your upset

I believe what your upset about is that there is no rebuttal to be made. The man is a liar, period. If he was a liberal you'd be cheering.

Republicans keep whining about a liberal press, but they won't stop lying, cheating, and having affairs and getting caught. They back whoever claims to be the biggest Christian, the most moral, and the most conservative and when it turns out to be lies, blame the press.

The "Prosperity Gospel" being

The "Prosperity Gospel" being preached here by Barton and his ilk is a Theological controversy within Christianity. It is a controversy that goes directly to interpretation of Jesus's quotes in the New Testament. This should be an important discussion for all Christians to weigh in on. What is Jesus telling his chosen about personal wealth, coveting material possessions & money?. That was a specific question 2000 years ago as it is today for those who want to live by Christ's teachings. As I read the Bible & New Testament I believed Jesus to say that spiritual salvation WAS the only true wealth for mankind. I didn't read anything to make me believe Jesus felt financially well-to-do people could not be saved. It was their motivations for getting money & how they used their finances which determined their worthiness to enter God's Kingdom. It is God's judgement of a man's soul which matters, not the judgement of his fellow man, for only God can look into the souls of men and know them for who they are.

I am not a Christian, but I prefer to believe most Christian's reject the "name it & claim it" interpretation of the "Prosperity Gospel". I respect those who believe Luke's parable meant the more faith you have the more faith you shall receive. The more you give to others, more will be given to you.

What can I say. We don't

What can I say. We don't have the Founding Fathers anymore, so we can only go by their words and David Barton has one of the most significant collections of their original writings in private hands. I think what he's trying to do is reveal the Christian character of the Founding Fathers and you're not going to get that in a religiously sterile state institution.

Even Christian leaders in the US have admitted David Barton has proved himself a fraud & a liar. http://politicaljesus.com/2012/07/25/worse-than-the-patriots-bible-david-bartons-the-founders-bible/

The fact that some fringe Christian extremists still quote him and invite him to speak, proves that they are more interested in promoting their personal agenda than the words of Christ or an honest history of the United States government. Some of our forefathers were "religious". Very few of our most influential forefathers were Christian. But neither was Dwight D Esenhower, who was not Baptisted or a member of any church until after he had been elected as President (even WW2 didn't motivate him to join any religion). Romney isn't Christian either by any Christian definition. It doesn't matter what religious or non-religious views were held by the creators of our Constitution & Bill of Rights. Every state but Massachusetts, Connecticut and Georgia ratified the Bill of Rights and our freedom from theocracy in 1789(the other 3 officially ratified in 1939). Is there anyone deluded enough to think the States did not know exactly what was in the 1st Amendment? US citizens, then or now, do not want to be oppressed by anyone else's religious ideas.

That site is no paragon of

That site is no paragon of intellectual criticism. According to Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, author of the Harbinger, there were only two nations in the history of the world that have been consecrated to God. One was Israel and the other was the United States. George Washington consecrated this nation in prayer at Ground Zero in the little church that survived the collapse of the Twin Towers without any damage. Many people would believe what you say, were it not for people like David Barton who is able to prove the Christianity of many of the Founding Fathers by use of their own words and writings. What I think most people don't understand is that we are a Christian nation by consensus only. The original immigrants to America were religious people, but were oppressed by the Church of England. That's why the Founders didn't want a "state" religion. Therefore they included the phrase "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion" in the Bill of Rights. The other half of it.. "Nor prohibiting the free exercise thereof." I would submit that we are in the process of canonizing a new "state" religion. Its pillars are homosexuality, abortion and evolution! All three of which violate and nullify the Biblical record. This is man centered religion, not God centered. Therefore we as a nation are stepping out from under the protection of God that we have enjoyed for much of our existence. Many believe that 9-11 was a harbinger of the judgment that is coming to America!

Only according to Barton. His last book was so full of lies the publisher recalled the book. Have you ever heard of that before or since? He made up the quotes that supposedly came from his private collection.

A person can be a liar, a fraud, a con man, but if he claims to be a Christian, people will defend him.

I've never given that much

I've never given that much thought until reading this article, but yes, the communist philosophy of taking from the productive and giving to the non-productive is the opposite of what's represented here. That's why communist societies never prosper to any great degree until they embrace some form of capitalism. Our own society is increasingly socialist and degrading as a result. This doesn't mean you forget the poor as Paul said in Gal 2:10. But obviously each servant started out with one Mina and the ones that turned a profit (wanted to please their master) were rewarded with cities (a connection between productivity and leadership)! The wicked servant that hid the Mina and returned it with no interest was stripped of his Mina and had it given to the one who accomplished the most. Now that's interesting because the Minas were not theirs, but the King's. So one would have to conclude that the additional Mina increased the first servant's reward, perhaps another city. The last statement is fairly ominous - don't want to be in the group that doesn't want the one who went away and then returned as King, because your end isn't so pleasant.

raysny's picture

Way4JC writes: "Our own

Way4JC writes: "Our own society is increasingly socialist and degrading as a result."

Under Eisenhower, the richest paid 91% in taxes and America was entering a period of growth and prosperity not seen since. Kennedy lowered it from 90% to 70%. Republicans have been lowering it more and more even though it is harming the country. It is currently 35%. So your claim of "increasingly socialist" doesn't fit.

A good analogy is a 300lb man who diets and gets down to a healthier 180lb. Great. Continuing to diet and getting down to 90lbs is more unhealthy than the 300lbs.

Interesting. I like David

Interesting. I like David Barton and have great respect for him. I don't know anyone who has more knowledge about the Founding Fathers and what they said and believed than he does. I would like to see this comment about the four government regulated industries fleshed out a little more. How severely were they regulated (controlled) in comparison to other industries and what were they forced to do for political reasons as opposed to market realities.

> I don't know anyone who has

You must not know many people in general, then. Considering most of the stuff he "knows" has been fabricated to suit his political agenda, it appears that every single college history student knows more about the founding fathers than this asshat.

When Colbert said that there were folks rewriting the bible to remove the "obvious liberal bias", I thought he was joking. Turns out you can't come up with stuff that's too crazy to too far for a repub to go out and do just so they can steal from others.

You don't know anyone who has more knowledge about the founding fathers? ROFL! Barton is a quack and lap dog for the "Christian nation" bunch who's revisionist history has been refuted many times over. I suggest you read the "Liars For Jesus" books by Chris Rodda. SHE is a true scholar and historian who knows what the Founding Fathers said and believed. HINT: they DID NOT believe in Christianity nor did the found this country on Christian or Biblical principles. People FLED FROM nations founded on such to get here.

David Barton was a math

David Barton was a math teacher in an Evangelical school started by his parents with less than 100 students before he decided he was a historian. He never took history in college, he received a BA in religious education from Oral Roberts University.

He was caught fabricating much of his "information" in his book. In July, "the History News Network voted David Barton’s book “The Jefferson Lies” the “least credible history book in print.”" http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/14/hard-truth-for-author-publisher-pulls-the-jefferson-lies/

He lies about the Founding Fathers in order to push his own Evangelical agenda. This is not an opinion but well documented FACT.
