UC Berkeley Students Try to Ban Salvation Army Bell Ringers

The University of California-Berkeley is reviewing a resolution passed by the student government, in November, that would ban Salvation Army bell ringers from campus because of the Christian organization’s alleged stand against homosexuality.

The resolution states: "Salvation Army church services, including charity services, are available only to people ‘who accept and abide by the Salvation Army’s doctrine and discipline,’ which excludes homosexuality," reports CampusReform.org.

“Allowing the Salvation Army to collect donations on campus is a form of financial assistance that empowers the organization to spend the money it raises here in order to discriminate and advocate discrimination against queer people."

Kathy Lovin, a spokeswoman for the Salvation Army, told CampusReform.org: "The notion that we require those we help to 'accept and abide by the Salvation Army's doctrine and discipline which excludes homosexuality' to receive assistance is totally false. The only requirement for service from The Salvation Army is demonstrated need and our ability to meet it."

However, that's not entirely true. Some Salvation Army offices will only serve people who can prove that they reside in a nearby zip code.

So the only charities allowed

So the only charities allowed must pass the litmus test on LGBT rights and abortion or they will be banned? How very tolerant. They are doing nothing against these groups......they are helping those in need........but that's not enough. What a narrow-minded facist regime the left is becoming.

"The Salvation Army opposes

"The Salvation Army opposes any discrimination, marginalization or persecution of any person. There is no scriptural support for demeaning or mistreating anyone for any reason including his or her sexual orientation. We stand firmly upon our mission to meet human needs in His name without discrimination."

"We respect those who come to us in need, whatever their beliefs may be. We try to establish an environment in which spiritual choice is possible."

Our local Salvation Army is respected by most in the community regardless of their religious affiliation. I don't know what it is like everywhere, but here they actually seem to follow the basic tenets of Christianity. They don't judge, they help the poor, and they're good stewards with their money. Unlike Goodwill who spent over a million dollars on a new facility, they operate out of a remodeled building in one of the poorest sections in town. Unlike the local "Help" office which is government funded, they don't interrogate people in a degrading manner about what they are doing with every single penny they may offer in aid.

I just discovered another

I just discovered another article on OV regarding the Salvation Army which led me to do further research regarding their position on homosexuality. Sad. I am so disappointed I feel like cancelling Christmas.

This is good. The Salvation

This is good. The Salvation Army is a religious group and it has no business soliciting on a US College Campus as long as the organization supports discrimination against any form of equality. Change in society is difficult for most people, but our US Constitution is the supreme code for ensuring a civil and secular society that supports equality under the law. I will personally not donate any money to the Salvation Army until they change their policies against the LGBT Community and towards those who are not religious.
