The Kootenai County Republican Central Committee will soon be voting on whether or not Idaho should be declared a "Christian state" and to recognize the "Judeo-Christian bedrock of the founding of the United States."

The proposal claims that Christianity is under "strident attack" in the U.S. because state-sponsored Christian prayers are not allowed in public schools and other government institutions (video below).

"We're a Christian community in a Christian state and the Republican Party is a Christian Party," Jeff Tyler, a member of the committee, told Reuters.

"It's important that Christians stand up and be unashamed to say they're Christians," added Tyler.

Committee member Bjorn Handeen opposes the measure.

“It puts the government in a position of deciding what is Christianity and that's not a position I want the government to be in at all," Handeen told KXLY.

"You don't have to be anti-Christian to think it's a bad idea to mix religion and government," added Handeen.

Idaho state Rep. Christy Perry, also a Republican, recently defended the Followers of Christ religious sect who deny their children medical care, even in cases of life or death, on the basis of their religious beliefs.
