MSNBC's Joy Reid Criticizes Sarah Palin for Having a Christmas Tree (Video)

MSNBC’s Joy Reid, who was filling in for Ed Schultz on Christmas, took some shots at former half-term Alaska Governor and current Fox News commentator Sarah Palin for having a Christmas tree.

According to, Reid claimed that Palin was hypocritical to have a Christmas tree and defend "Christmas purity" (video below).

The MSNBC fill-in host said that the Book of Jeremiah, in the Bible, admonishes people for trimming trees:

Jeremiah 10: 3-5 states:

For the practices of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman shapes it with his chisel. They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter. Like a scare crow in a cucumber field, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good.

"Now, a Christmas purist wouldn't want us to stray from the Bible, would she?" stated Reid. "Everybody shares Christmas in some way. That could mean being tree-side with the family or even profiting off your called-in commercialism. "

“But if Sarah Palin wants us to believe there’s only one true meaning of Christmas," added Reid. "She can keep on pretending.”

There are different theological positions on Christmas trees.

The Rev Billy Graham's website states: "These verses, however, do not apply to Christmas trees, but they do condemn the idolatry practiced in Jeremiah’s day. God’s people were following the customs of the heathen who cut down trees, shaped the wood into idols, decorated them with silver and gold ornaments, and worshiped them as gods." notes that the word "Christmas" is not mentioned in the Bible and only came about in the 6th century via Pope Gregory, which brings into question the entire celebration of Christmas.
